Oakbourne
is dedicated to providing a unique solution to the question of
constructing a personally individualized building. Relying on
a time honored concept of timber framing. Oakbourne products allow
you to create a building that meets contemporary standards of
living set in a traditional aesthetic. The true oak frame building
concept was first developed by the Saxons in the 13th century
and reached its zenith in intricacy and exuberance in the 16th
century Elizabethan period. The traditional half timbered house
is a tribute to the carpenter's craft and express individuality,
an appreciation of tradition and an unwillingness to accept compromise.
The exposed beams provide an atmosphere of permanence and tradition
that can't be matched with other building styles.
Creating a traditionally styled home that is fully functional
in the most modern sense is Oakbourne's specialty. A variety of
plans and concepts are already available to choose from and our
experienced staff can help you find one to suit your needs or
create an entirely new building specifically designed for you.
Although our product reflects the aesthetic of an earlier age,
we utilize the latest computer technology to keep pace with twenty
first century architectural design.
All of our buildings are based on the concept of the timber frame.
Most of the timber frame buildings built in North America are
constructed from softwoods such as fir, pine cedar and redwood.
The Oakbourne building frame is manufactured from solid English
oak, a material that has been employed for centuries because it
is particularly straight and very hard. The growth rate of oak
is much slower than that of softwoods resulting in a tighter grain
pattern yielding a heavier and denser wood that is much stronger
and more durable than any softwood. Your individualized building
concept is translated to a timber frame design and that frame
is then cut and preassembled in England then disassembled and
shipped to your building site anywhere in America.
Modern
timber frame structures typically use a series of metal fasteners
to join the constituent members of the frame. Oakbourne's joinery
system is the traditional mortise and tenon joint, which is fastened
together with a specially seasoned oak peg. Over time the joint
tightens and becomes permanently secure. The vertical and horizontal
members of the frame are triangulated with diagonal braces that
are cut in graceful curves and give the structure strength and
a distinctive beauty not found in typical softwood frames. The
final touch to the beauty of the oak posts and beams is accomplished
with a variety of treatments that result in finish hues ranging
from saffron to honey gold to a distinctive silvery grey.
In an effort to remain environmentally conscious Oakbourne deals
only with suppliers who are committed to planting for the future
wildlife habitat, wind shelter and overall landscape enhancement
as well as for the timber harvest.
